hoping to start flying again soon, so heavily into the train sim right now I

welcome back Dave.. I thought Train Sim would be the most boring of past
times with a choice of 2 directions etc. What generates the buzz?? Just
curious.

Train sim is good but , unless you buy a comnmercial add-on, you can run
into all sorts of difficulties - definately not as add-on friendly as Flight
Sim.
If they can make Train Sim as user friendly as FS its never going to
attract.

All my life, trains have been secondary to aviation. Yes, I have every FS
that's come done the pike, and TS too. The latter doesn't get used a tenth
as much as FS but it does have a soothing effect on me. I downloaded the
train Silver Streak from the movie of the same name, and I can sit in the
domed passenger car and listen to the theme music from the movie. It's
included in the download. And since Silver Streak is my all time favorite
train movie, I just love it.
Going backward and forward...yeah, it does that. But the challenges can
be similar to FS. For example, do you have enough engines to pull your
consist(train) up the grade or do you stall and start sliding backwards?
When you get to your destination, can you figure out the correct solution to
spot your individual cars at the proper place in the yard? The engineer
panels aren't as complicated as a modern aircraft, but the old steamers can
be plenty confusing and if you don't follow procedures, you ain't goin
nowheres!
Sightseeing in a J-3 Cub over the countryside is a lazy way to spend
some time...so is riding inside the cab of a heavy freight enjoying that
same scenery up close and personal.
Flying VOR to VOR....changing from track to track.
Dropping below 10000, speed 250 kts. Entering a town, speed limit 40...30...
and easing into the station or yard.
Exceeding structural limits of the aircraft...rapid destruction.
Exceeding the speed limits of a curve...rapid derailment.
But most of all, I just take a train out to sit back and relax, watching
the scenery flow by...

(I too was going to harass the OP with my usual Train Simulator statement:
"Push throttle, train go fast. Pull brake, train go slow... Whoopee.", but
you've made me see the error of my ways. :-)

Hey Don,
I belong to a virtual railroad (NorthEastern RR (NERR))and its actually a
little harder than it seems.
Timetables, dropping freight in correct order, speedlimits (hard downhill
with 13000 tons) and making it up hills. once I tried doing more than just
driving forward it got tricky, there are red lights to obey!

Hi Dave
It sounds very er... 'administrative' is the word I think ..bit like going
to work and facing the day and all its probs.. clocking watching until you
can get back home to flight sim. Nah I liked the idea sitting back with a
glass of wine rattling through the villages and watching the scenery go by,
not giving a stuff if the cars were overloaded or dropping off. Lets do the
next station at 100 kmh and get some reaction.

You have a one track mind, gringo! ;-)

Trains can go up and down these days too....gravity has proven that.

Sounds very interesting, is the level of realism comparable to the level of
realism in FS?

Cat in the Hat

2005-07-28, 8:36 pm

Since I have flown C-172s IRL, I can compare the merits of that to FS.
However, never having driven a train, I can't say. It does give you a better
appreciation of what the real train engineers have to do.

Hi Butts,

If you did that in N.Z., wouldn't you shoot right off the end of the
