I just happened on something that had so favorable a result on my new LCD
monitor that I thought I'd pass it on to you, just in case there are a few
of you out there using LCD's who haven't discovered this as yet.
If you are using XP and have an LCD monitor, your text viewing can be
greatly improved by going into control panel, appearances, effects, then
checking under "use the following for fonts" (CLEAR TYPE).
This has made a HUGE difference in the quality of the fonts on my LCD Flat
Panel.
I'm sure many of you already are aware of this highly suggested setting for
flat panels, but I'm posting it because it wasn't even mentioned in my
monitor manual and apparently it's well known as a suggested setting for the
LCD's.
Anyway, I hope it helps a few of you. It sure helped ME.!!!

I use a CRT and set it to clear type too.
It looks a whole let better.

I originally had an Encore dxr3 card installed which seemed to smooth out
the text when i passed the signal from the gfx card through that and out to
the monitor.
Now i don't have the card installed, the clear type fonts give the same sort
of effect.

Yeah, kinda strange!! On my PC with Sony 19" crt and Radeon 128 it made
things sharp as a tack, but on my wifes Mag 17" crt and integrated Gateway
video the standard looked better.. go figure......

Well, I hate to be the rain on the party but I've never liked ClearType..
it seems to add some color pixels around the fonts to smooth them. To my
eye it makes the fonts kinda "fuzzy".

I had my set on "Standard" and I just turned it off to test that... no
difference. :-/

I don't have an "appearances" option under control panel. I do have
something similar inside the Display settings...

I don't have the option "use the following for fonts" under my "Effects"
in the Display Setting, however.

Yes it worked on my CRT as well! Thanks Dudley - another small step on the
road to perefection (i.e a journey without end!) :0))

Agree here, tried it on both towers (both 17" LCD) and it seemed to make the
writing fuzzy.

Hi KT;
I must be nuts, but after downloading this I can't find where to access any
settings to tweak.
It installed ok and it exists in search as a dll, but where do access this
tool?
:-)

Disregard my post asking where the program is. I dowloaded the wrong tweak
by mistake and found the error.
Thank you

Hi Arthur'

Hi Arthur;
Actually, I got my first privately owned computer the week I retired. Then I
proceeded to get busier with aviation than I was when I was working.
Most of the things that come along new like hardware installation and new
programs I usually end up trying to deal with between long distance phone
calls :-) ....sort of "on the fly so to speak" :-)
Tonight I actually downloaded the wrong "tweak" because I was in a hurry as
usual and picked up on a key word "clear" and grabbed the wrong file! :-)
Anyway...about that Clear Type Tweak; my flat panel monitor is already
displaying type better than it did on the analog just selecting clear type
without any tweaking program.

I discovered this after I realized I had grabbed the wrong program by
mistake and it wasn't there!! :-)
Actually KT, the normal clear text selection in effects made the text better
than it ever was on the analog monitor. I don't even need to tweak it.

Hi Dudley.....

I'm sorry you felt the need for a reply to my weak attempt at a pun just to
bring a smile to your face, but I appreciate you taking the time to explain.
I, too, downloaded the Clear Type thingie and am enjoying the results, even
on my CRT monitor. I'm glad you are enjoying it as well and I promise to
try to improve my puns in future : )
