Author Filing IFR in-flight

I was flying off-line recently, since there were no VATSIM controllers in
the area of the world where I was flying, and had a real problem with the AI
ATC.

I had clearance on an IFR flight plan from Dubai (OMDB) to East Midlands
(EGNX) but nipped out to sort my washing machine out, whilst flying over
Iran. When I came back, I found that ATC had been trying to contact me and
because there had been no response, they cancelled my IFR plan.

No problem I thought, I'll simply refile in flight. However, as soon as I
had readback my clearance and changed to the new squawk code, ATC then told
me to turn to a heading of 155deg, which was nearly180deg off where I wanted
to go, i.e. back the way I had come. I assumed at first that they would then
vector me back onto my route, but after heading the wrong way for over
10mins, I got fed up, cancelled IFR and turned back around. I tried again,
thinking I had done something wrong, but each time, I got the same response.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought it might be because the wrong leg was
active in the GPS flight plan (maybe ATC was trying to get me back onto
that?), so I made sure that the most appropriate leg was showing as active.
No difference.

Is it possible to prepare your flightplan from Dubai to East Midlands, go to
find route then manually delete waypoints / VORS that you have flown past
then say no when asked about moving aircraft to departure location. ATC is
probably a audio checklist of entire route and gets confused if joining it
in the middle somewhere.

Interesting thought - I have just done a quick test and it does indeed seem
to work like that, unless it's just coincidence! Thanks very much for
suggesting it.
