ok so after some computer problems i had to format my c:\ partion and while
thigns like graphcis drivers,. windows and my msn desktop search where lost,
everything on D:\ partion is fine. Whatt this does mean though is a
re0isntalation of everything. Now im guessing this is to add the registry
edits once again. But if i backup the registry to the D:\ drive and anything
does happen , all i would need to do is import my backup from d:\.

is my thinking correct, or does installing things do something else, and
will importating a backup feck everything up?

Thanks
Chris

Do you have windowsxp on C: and the applications on D:?
Where are the data? My documents is standard installed on C:, but you can
change that.

Perhaps you can try and see if you're right, but I myself would prefere a
reinstall of the software.
FS2k4 for example has datafiles for every user that it stores somewhere in
the windows folder (outside the registry and outside the mydocs folder).
Office too uses thngs like normal.dot that it stores elsewhere. I huess many
applications heve their own habbits and repairing that could be much more
work than a simple reinstall of all software.

It gives you an opportunity to clean up the not used applications as well.

Gerard

(it would be nice though if it worked like that)

I have windows on C:\ and everything else including my documents on D:\ so
while i only lose drivers, windows and MSN Desktop search, it is anoying
having to re-install everything but if what you siad about thigns outside
the registry was what i thought could happen so anyway, back with installing
everything, and yeah it did clear all the crap out of C:\

Chris;
I go through formats and re-installs all the time. Even though there are
lots of utilitys on the market that should make this process easier it has
been my experience that the most reliable and best way to do this is to
re-install everything.
One of the great things about most install programs is that if a file exists
and has not been altered the install routine will not over-write it. In a
nut shell the installs (over the top) of existing programs takes much less
time but the additions to the registry are done correctly.
In my own setup the only thing I have on my C partition is Windows. That
way I can format and reinstall eveything more quickly.
