Seriously...

Google shows 81 references to the word addictive in this group.

I know I can be outside and look up at the clouds or a passing GA airplane
and get a strong sudden urge to flightsim. Is this not just like a crack
addict who can be clean for years and seeing something like a crack pipe
brings on strong urges?

When we are flightsimming do our brain synapses flood with serotonin and
dopamine to the point that we withdraw if we don't get another "fix" in a
day or two?

Simple--just plead guilty when they haul you in, they then throw you into
the clink, no computers, you go cold turkey and are cured when released in
about 10 years. :-))))

Darn Dallas!!!!!! I'm a bit worse. I have to look in this newsgroup
before flying. There may be a new aircraft, or airport, or something
that I must look at before pushing the throttle to the firewall.

But when they release you form prison Flight Simulator 2014 will be out and
maybe it will be a virtual reality helmet so your freinds put it on your
head when you aren't suspecting it and it pulls you back in again!

Dallas,

The only thing more addictive than flight simming is: FLYING!

I was a long, long, long time flight sim junkie who finally decided to take
the plunge and get my private pilot certificate. I soooo wish I hadn't
waited until I was 43 years old to do so.

If any of you (in the USA) would spend $49 for an FS9 add-on, then you
really owe it to yourself to take that $49 and spend it on a "Discovery
Flight" at an FBO near you!!

Go see what the world looks like with an unlimited frame rate, true
6-degrees of freedom movement and realistic force feedback! Not to mention
awesome audio effects too!!!

Support General Aviation now so that "FS15" isn't the only way to experience
flying in the future.

Flight simming is still fun, but nothing (and I mean NOTHING!) compares to
the real deal.

I am very happy for you, Jay, in your enthusiasm.

But please remember that, for various reasons, there are those amongst
us that don't have that option.

BTW, flight sim crashes are easier to walk away from.... ;-)

What option is that? I'm not suggesting that everyone run out and begin
taking flying lessons. All I'm saying is, for the price of one piece of
software, those who enjoy the hobby of simming can experience the real
thing.

Simming gave me a huge leg up when it came to my flight training. And now,
flying the real thing drives me to take a more realistic approach to what I
do and how I do it in FS9.

But, the reality is, if one tallys up the $$$ invested in being a dedicated
"simmer" who insists on having first class computer hardware, the necessary
peripherals and all the other "nice to haves", then trust me, you've
probably already spent at least half (if not more) of what it would cost to
complete a private pilot course.

And, with proper training, emergencies in real life usually don't result in
"crashes."

Dallas,

Not too long ago we compared real life to sim.
Once you do that, you know you've gone over the edge. You're hooked!
Especially when massive difference of framerates are discussed and
people start saying things like "OMG! There's a 3D world out there!"

When simmers ask RL pilots if they ever get overtaken during approach,
you know these people belong in a white, padded room.

Flightsimming addictive? Hell no.....what ever gave you that idea?

Marcel,

Not too long ago, I flew from Chandler Muni (KCHD) to Tucson Intl (KTUS) in
real life and WAS overtaken by a 737.

Fortunately, there was someone on the other end of ATC who did more than
just clear me to land from 15 miles out with no other intruction. They
vectored me 10 degrees left of course for a few minutes while the 737
serenly flew past from my high 5 o'clock to my co-alt 1 o'clock.

He was on the ground and almost at his gate before I got there and was
cleared for my approach in a C172SP.

I'll compromise. Next April, I'll tryout an Airbus A321 and have a nice,
long, relaxing look out the window as I fly from Toronto to Los Angeles.

Jay, your idea is great and I could easily take a demo flight at a nearby
airport and it's not particularly expensive. However, I just might really
like it and I know there's no way on God's green earth, I can afford to get
a PPL due to financial and health reasons. So, I come back to my FS9 and
it's just not what it used to be and I decide to play Scrabble instead.
What have I achieved? One great experience for an hour and lots of
disappointment for years thereafter. I used to go flying in a l72 many
years ago with a student pilot while he did circuits at a local airport. It
was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it immensely. I would have taken up flying
then and there if I could have but I couldn't. There was no FS9 at the
time. Finally, when FS9 proved itself to be a reasonable facsimile, I felt
a similar high doing the circuits myself as the pilot on my computer. No,
it isn't the same, but to me, it's as close as I'll ever come to piloting my
own plane. Good luck to you, enjoy and be safe. I envy your frame rates.

Well I'd like to think it doesn't happen very often anyway.
Obviously someone made a boo-boo....too many reservations on the KTUS
approach list. :-)

At least you were vectored out of the way first.
Besides...it costs more for a 737 to do a go-around than it would cost a
C172SP.

But hey....you had a great view of his landing!

OK... here's a good one for you:

I fly in RL as often as I can because it make the sim better.

Tucson does have parallel runways and they usually try to keep the spam cans
on the smaller of the two.

I've been cleared to land on 11L (the bigger of the two...) while eight F16s
and a 737 held for me to get down and off the active. Not sure why they
didn't have me sidestep to 11R but it was a cool view on short final!

Not only was the view cool, but I could clearly hear (through the skin of
the plane and through my headset...) the idling engines of the F16s when I
was still 1/4 mile from touchdown.

Jay,
Thats sounds exactly like my story. I had been flying PC flight sims
since the first ones came out, but in my heart I have always wanted to be
able to fly a real airplane. Then about 3 years ago I decided that I wasn't
getting any younger, and if was going to get a private pilots license, then
it was about time that I actually did something about it. It cost me more
than I had imagined, but as far as I am concerned it was well worth it. My
flight training was challenging for me, and at times terrifying, but in the
end I stuck with it and managed to EARN my private pilots license. I like to
use the term "earn", because you can't simply go out an purchase one, you
have to work very, very hard and earn it. And for me that is what makes it
so rewarding. I still love flying PC flight sims, but it tickles the heck
out of me to be able to go climb in a real cockpit go flying.

Chris,

Nope, wasn't shaking at all. ATC let me know he was there and vectored me
to stay out of his way. My only concern at that time was staying focused
and looking outside for any additional traffic.

No pics, but then trying to take photos while flying solo within five miles
of a Class C airport is really not a good idea. Especially a Class C which
also has an Air National Guard base making for the possibility of F16s and
KC-135s in the extended pattern too.

Cheers,

Quoting myself in an earlier post...

"Simming gave me a huge leg up when it came to my flight training. And now,
flying the real thing drives me to take a more realistic approach to what I
do and how I do it in FS9."

I agree completely!

After re-reading this post I think it's intent is not really trolling,
perhaps just an "english is not my first language" thing.

Sorry.

Personally, I don't mind felling like somebody, or better yet, felling
somebody, and have no trouble with expensive things or booze...
What was the question again???

For your punishment, you are hereby sentenced to wash your mouth out with

spit it out. :-)))

Hi John

<G>

It's a GAME on my PC at the moment as NTL have decided not to allow
the Brighton area any TV or net access for a few hours :-( so no
real weather at present.

BTW, did any UK peeps see Watchdog last night (Tues)? I saw the final
minute or two and noticed NTL being mentioned.

Regards
James

PS Temporal correction. NTL's coming back on line was stated to be
occurring at 18:45. The resurection happened at 16:15. Yahoo!

addective is a understatement, atleast for me. I have only had the
flightsim for a couple of months now and I find it a great way to relax

and just let your brain travel. I have a 45 min. plus drive to and
from
work, find myself thinking about where I am going to fly off to
next...what a kick. Gary
