I've found another bit of information since that may explain everything.
It seems that the analog CH drivers don't really support Win2k/XP at all,
instead one should use the native M$ driver. So, for instance, my CH
FlightStick Pro should be configured as a "4-button flightstick w/POV and
throttle". This seems to confirm what I suspected, i.e. that CH has
discontinued support for their gameport devices as soon as the USB line of
products came out a few years ago.
