Author Ram Queries Part 2

Sorry for reviving this thread. Think shop has got to the bottom of my
problem with system crashes. I had an ECS K8M800-M2 Socket 754 motherboard
with AMD64 3000+ processor along with 512mb pc3200 ram. Purchased another
512mb (albeit double sided as I didnt know about mixing) with same speed etc
and pc kept crashing etc a few days after. Did a lot of tests and ram
worked singly in either slot with memtest but together a no-no. Got new
double sided changed to single but system was worse. Finally took pc to
store this morning who called me there and said that my board/cpu doesnt
take too kindly to 1Gb of pc3200 (400) memory - despite them selling the
initial one within my package and recommended running it with 2 x matched
pair of pc2700. They have run memtest and prime95 all day on 2700 and seems
fine.

Anyone know is there really an speed lose in downgrading to the latter and
if pc3200 is (400) whats pc2700?

Thanks

PC 2700 is (333).

Instead of running to the store and replacing the memory, why not slow
some options down in the BIOS?
The FSB (front side bus) and/or the multiplier and the memory timings
are all inter-related.

Running the highest settings doesn't give you the best results either!

Here are some results from my own tests with an ABIT NF7 board and
PC-3200 memory. I use Sandra, a freeware tool, for my performance
measurements:

FSB Mult. bus* mem timing performance
200 10.5 400 2-2-2-7 2533
181 12 364 2-2-2-6 2757
181 12 364 2-2-2-9 2765
166 12.5 334
200 11 fail
170 12.5 fail

* - this bus speed is determined by the BIOS from the other values. At
least on my mb, I can not change it directly! It is the (400) number
you posted for the PC3200 memory. Or the (333) for 2700 memory.

Point is, there are several parameter that can determine if your
memory causes the PC to fail. It doesn't mean the memory is
defective.

Just tweak the numbers - for faster speeds, sometimes increasing the
voltage just a bit, like .25 or .5 volts, will help.
This will increase the heat created by the memory of course, so be
careful! Overclockers do it all the time ...

For mem timings, note that lower numbers mean faster timings - they
designate clock cycles where a lower number means less cycles for a
particular event to take place. But there's a limit before the memory
can't complete it's work before the timing is up!

Hi Tom,

My ram worked fine as single strips, no crashes and passes memtest86 with
flying colours. Problems only occur when I put the together. The system is
locking, cant get into windows, cant even get as far as the POST screen (I
think) where pc lists all master drivers etc. Cant get into BIOS. All I
get is the screen with AWARD...blah blah blah AMD63 3000+ then nothing.

I am not one for changing settings and overclocking as pc needed by whole
family and I cant afford to screw it up. All under warrantry so left it up
to the dealer to sort. I relise now that pc3200 is DDR400 and pc2700 is
DDR333 just wondered if I will noticwe much of a drop in speed. pc3200 that
I had is CL3A and have been told pc2700 is probably the same although I have
read if I got CL2 or 2.5 it might work out the same speed as DDR400.

the errors could have been caused by a number of things. Some boards need to
downclock the memory (ie 3200 down to 2700) others might increase the
latency (2.5-3-3-7 down to 3-4-4-8 or something). A new BIOS for the board
*MIGHT* have fixed it but i doubt it.

the slow down from PC3200 to PC2700 is probably not so bad, and its better
having a working slightly slower system than a fast, but unstable one.....
:-)

Pc seemed to run ok last light with fs9, doom3 and battlefield 2. Will have
to watch over it over next few days and not add anything or change any
drivers to be sure its running fine. When I inserted the original 2 x 3200
it run for a few days before crashing started.
