I got tired of waiting 2 minutes for my "Select Aircraft" window to come up
every time I used it. Went through the entire list 5 times asking myself
"do I really use this aircraft". The answer was no 57 times so I moved all
57 of them all out of the FS9 folder into cold storage.

I mean really... when was the last time you used the Wright Flyer?

I highly recommend the exercise; it cut the load time down to one third.

I get tired too, 730 aircrafts, I promised myself to get some into cold
storage this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

That's a good idea, but not for default models, leave them where they
are as other add-ons may require them...

I thought there are already freeware managers around that could
automate that for you?

It isn't a new idea really. Have suggested it for a while and several
times. The process is to create a folder: \ - Aircraft Hanger ..and
MOVE the folders of each unused plane there. The ` - ' causes the
folder to rise to the top of the list. Do not remove default planes
used for AI (unless you have a fancy AI installation). Then if desired
the plane folders in the `Hanger' can be zipped and left in place.
When taking the plane out of `the Hanger'.. simply unzip to \aircraft
and change zip name from Airbus320.zip to Airbus320(open).zip

It saves space and makes Sim start up faster. That's because the
startup routine has less folders to parse in the process of build a
LIST of planes to display!!

Sure. As Gregory mentioned, just create a new folder somewhere. ( I made a
folder outside of the FS9 folder, but it likely doesn't matter.)

Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft and move
the folders of aircraft you don't use often into the storage folder. If you
want to use a specific one again, move it back.

As for AI aircraft, well we know things like the Wright Flyer, Spirit of St
Louis and Ford Trimotor etc are not AI... so move them.

If you want to take credit for it and be the spokesman.. that's fine.
The goal is to manage the aircraft and speed FS startup times.

There are two HANGERS for unused aircraft.. 1) is under the FS200x
directory and is UNZIPPED near-field storage!! 2) is another HANGER
folder on bulk drive where all the components are zipped (retaining
folder structure of course.) Using WinZip.. you can do a CTRL+A
(select All) and right mouse (context menu) and say ZIP and it uses
the foldername to name ZIP. It also parses the subfolders. Once the
ZIP is CRC'd and tests out ok.. then delete the individual files.

-Gregory

btw.. defragging afterwards is a good idea..

do you mean `hangers' as in plural?

Imagine having a folder: \aircraft scrapyard

where the textures would be deleted and the gauges
pulled out of the panel.

or have a folder: \aircraft modshop

where one is tuning the CFG and AIR files.. adding
new engines and avionics..

a folder: \aircraft paintshop (or bodyshop)

where the textures are being painted..

and so forth.. then when ready to fly.. move with Tug
(file manager and mouse) to the Ops folder: \aircraft

ok.. kinda' weird but why not? and no one would know really!!

Make a list of them all.. !!
by opening a CMD window in: \FS200x\aircraft

and typing: DIR > List.txt

now the List has all aircraft folders

The following are both freeware:

1. For removing AI aircraft from your list of flyable aircraft, try
BBQHideAI.zip from the AVSIM file library.

2. For "hangaring" unused aircraft, try Rana's FlightSim Manager.
Warning: it's thorough. Not only will it archive unused aircraft, it
will also check to see which gauges can be safely archived as well (=
gauges not in use by other aircraft).

Are you sure?
I once landed at KGCN and the Ford Trimotor was parked there.
I've come airborne DC-3s several times, so why not the Ford also?

The Wright Flyer is another story....

G, would you give us more detail as to how to do this? "open a command
window" in \FS200x\aircraft? Can I use the command line in windows
explorer?

I typed DIR > List.txt in and got nothing.

Ok sure.. the best way is to find a Context Menu addin called
`Command Prompt Here' which allows right-mouse clicking on ANY
folder and opening a CMD (DOS command) window at that folder.

Otherwise.. Hit Start, Click RUN, and type CMD in the field.

the folder must be correct when executing the DIR line. Some DOS
guru would be able to describe staring CMD in the correct folder.

Start/Programs/Accessories/Command Prompt

Use normal DOS commands to CD to the directory you need

As an interesting note, the Command Prompt (DOS BOX to Win95 heads) will
recognize both old and expanded folder names.

Oh well... DOS... now we're talkin' my operating system. I'm not quite in
the same league as Bill but I was considered a minor DOS master in the 80's.
In fact it pissed me off when Microsoft started call them "Folders" instead
of "Directories". That's right in there with "My Computer".... yuck... and
I don't keep any documents in "My Documents" either. I still call them
Directories and people give me weird looks .

Anyway, that's a neat trick, but what if you are creating the contents of a
CD? Can you direct the output file back to the hard drive with DIR

One hangar besides another hangar make 2 .hangars, correct?
A hangar besides a hanger, what is that.

The meaning is, I created a new folder \hangar and shifted
some AI aircraft into it.

Hi Günter,

You moved your AI aircraft to another folder? AI aircraft are usually no
problem as they don't show up the Aircraft List and they don't slow down the
menu loading time.

I just moved the folders of aircraft I don't use from:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Aircraft

To:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Aircraft Hanger Not in use

As an example, some of the folders I moved were:
Consolidated B-24J Liberator by Alpha

DeHavilland Super Otter Empty

DeHavilland Super Otter Loaded

DeHavilland_Comet

Douglas DC-3 Caribair N8011E

Douglas DC-3 Delta Air Lines 'Ship 41'

Douglas DC-3 Dutch Dakota

Thanks Dallas, I understand now:
AI Aircraft = minor impact on loading time
Non AI a/c = slowing down loding time.

Sure can... just put the complete path after the > (send-to command).

I too hate the term "folder," although in all fairness when I was still
teaching "Intro to Computers" every student looked at me strangely whenever
I'd use the "file cabinet analogy" to explain what "directories" and
"sub-directories" were!

Without exception, there'd be someone in the class who'd ask, "Why not just
call them FOLDERS then?" ;)

OK, I can live with "folders," but I'm with you 100% with the incredibly
stupid "My Documents," "My Pictures," and "My..." stuff! <argh!>
