its been my experience, in these type of cases, that it will be your
AVS(anti-virus-software), now in the case of Nortons v Internet sounds very
much to me that nortons is "blocking your use of the internet", now heres a
thought, are you running another firewall as well as XP's own one??, that
can do the same thing... getting back to what i was saying about nortons----
check it over very carefully look at each setting that you can, and just see
if there might be something tucked away in there...

the other thing to consider, goto www.grisoft.com and download the free
version of AVG, write it to a CD then transfer it to your laptop, run the
setup, but skip the updates for now, then UNinstall nortons(beware it leaves
a hell of a lot behind) reboot, and try again.... AVG is the best performing
AVS that is free, and equals/surpasses nortons, and the bonus is that it
uses a fraction of your PC's resouces that nortons does....

hope this helps in some way

cheers Paul
