High Altitude Take Off
|
|
|
| Am trying to take off from La Paz (13300ft) with a PSS A319. Very difficult
to get off runway.
Length of runway 13116 ft so plenty of distance. What's the technique for
take off from high altitude locations. Less flap/more flap? Any help much
appreciated

Try a slightly leaner fuel mixture

| Ian,
I don't fly the 319, but do have the PMDG. I selected the 737-600NG as a
comparison test. First point, I assume you are referring to SLLP. The
first La Paz entry I found was 200 feet AMSL.
Ok I normally take off with flaps 5. On this occasion I used flaps 5 ( No
change then). My ZFW weight was 97,000Lb and my fuel was 18,500Lb. That is a
fair bit of fuel in this bird, albeit most of the centre tank is still
available.
To take off I wind up to around 70% to stabilise, then full power. I reckon
I was airborne at about 75% of the runway with an IAS of 135kts. Looking at
some follow up points, I then re-ran and aborted at 135kts and just stopped
within the runway.
My main point here is watch IAS rather than Ground Speed as the latter is no
use at this altitude.
Once mastered try landing at SLLJ for a laugh. Even better try getting out
again. You can use more than the strip in my book.
Regards
Geoff

| Quilljar,
I take it you're taking the p**s, he's in a commercial jet. Made me smile
though.

Thanks for all the advice. I have managed from R10 with an ZFW of 104,000
lbs and fuel 20,800lbs. Flaps at 5. Took a moving start and hitting TO/GA
thrust after about 100 feet down runway. No room for an abort though. Think
William is correct. Looking at Lanchile's timetable flights from La Paz go
only a relatively small distance to Arica or Iquique and presumably do a
refuel before setting off for final destinations. So I obviously have too
much fuel on board.
Thanks guys
Ian

| No I was quite serious, but then I have only ever flown GA aircraft IRL !
:-)
(plus, how did you read my last post? It hasn't shown up on my own browser
yet!)

| Quilljar,
Firstly the reply was tongue in cheek. Secondly I have only ever flown a GA
IRL!! for one lesson, so I am far from expert on such matters, albeit this
was a jet question. Thirdly, I use Demon as my ISP and news is fast to
update. I use OE rather than a browser to read news.
Cheers

| It is a turbine engine...you don't adjust mixture like you would in a piston
engined aircraft.

| lol Q,
I think what Geoff is trying to say is that you CAN'T set mixture in a jet -
there is non...Ian is flying an Airbus 319.

If you think your news server might be having problems, you might try
using another. My ISP provided news server is sometimes funky like
that, and even a group like this seems to be marked "read only" on
that server as well, so I've been very happy the past couple of years
using this free server instead (text only; no binaries):
http://news.individual.net/
Register at the web site, then just configure the news server in your
news reader (requires user name and password provided via email after
you register).
I've always found that both posting and retrieving via the
news.individual.net server is nearly instantaneous, and the service
seems very reliable.

Thanks Melly, I may just try that. I didn't even know it was possible...

| I remember hearing of 757's using that runway IRL
On a funny note, during Worldflight Australia 2001, the guys few the 747-400
sim into there, Earned someone the nickname "La Paz"

| If you do the Density Altitude calculation it should tell you based on
Alltitude, Pressure and temperature how long of a runway you need.
