Author Can't backup aircraft folder due to corrupt mdl file

I am trying to backup the entire FS9 aircraft folder to another drive.
However, it gets to the BOAC377 folder and can't continue copying the
aircraft folder because the file BOAC377.MDL is corrupt. I can get around it
by selecting all folders within the aircraft folder, and then deselecting
that one folder so it is not included in the copy..but how can I get RID of
it? XP does not let me copy, move, delete or do anything with that one
BOAC377.MDL file. Would maybe scandisk fix the error? but would it be an
error on the disk?

I've had a few files from time to tome that became corrupted like that in
WinXP. Couldn't delete, move, copy, etc.

One was a sitting right on my desktop, so it was especially annoying.
After a google, found the way to get rid of it from both the "Annoyances"
website and also Microsoft's Knowledge Base.

Appararently, WinXP loads some "header information" about files into memory
before they can be manipulated. If its get corrupted, the file becomes a
boat anchor. This is what worked for me:

-------------------------
- Drop to a DOS shell and execute:

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

- Delete (or try to salvage) the file (either from in DOS or Windows
Explorer) and then re-register this .dll in DOS by executing:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll
-------------------------

The shmedia.dll is tied in with loading the header info for "media files".
My few "problem files" were .mp3's, but perhaps the model files for aircraft
also store some "media header info" as well. (?)

Also found that a good Windows DOS shell (i.e., "Windows Commander") can
also (most of the time) take care of these problem files, even when WinXP
itself won't. Guess it works files at a "lower level" or whatever.
Copying the file to different location, deleting the original, and then
copying it back may salvage it. I remember doing that back in DOS/Win3.11
to salvage files that got hosed by those silly "bad logical sectors" on
drives. (Sector is physically fine, but the OS has marked it bad after it
failed a checksum -- usually by an inadvertant shutdown while the drive was
reading.)

Try this, it comes in handy for a lot of similiar difficulties:

GiPo@MoveOnBoot 1.9.5

MoveOnBoot allows you to copy, move or delete files on the next system
boot. This comes in very handy, if you need to replace or delete files
which are locked by other applications, loaded into memory or cannot
be changed until next system boot. You could manually enter a line to
the wininit files, but using MoveOnBoot is much simpler, since the
program can be integrated into shell - it creates the
"Copy/Move/Delete on boot" context menu item.
