So, I've got this great new DSL service 1.5/768 with a couple static IP
addresses. I love flight simming and thinking of hosting a server @
home for FS...currently on FS9.
Anyone have any suggestions of what program I should use? Preferable a
freebee. What appeals to simmers? Something with hops, a free-for-all
server, Teamspeak or Roger Wilco? I want to make it fun and useful for
people.

I appreciate your suggestions.

hosting some sort of gaming server on that isn't very good. You can get away
with 1 or 2 teamspeak servers on their, but you cant download or anything
while they are running other wise they will get LAG. I wouldn't bother, that
line is not very fast, I un a GSP (www.deadlyhosting.com) and I go well over
1.5 per second per box, even my redirect and voice servers do. Seeing as FS
is a l large program aswell, I think you will find it hard to be hosting any
more then 2 people if that without lag

You can use FSHost. Check http://www.chocolatesoftware.com/fshost/
It's free, many simmers run fshost and you can check which other hosts are
active with fshostspy (free as well).

I never hosted a sim myself, but I am not very pessimistic on your specs. If
you run a voice server also, then you might need more bandwidth, but many
simmers simply use the chatwindow instead of teamspeach or roger wilco.
There's not that many data that needs to be transpoted, simply type,
direction and speed of the different a/c that are joining and perhaps some
extra for overhead and fsnavigator data. And chat of course, but people do
not type that fast that you will notice.

So you might simply give it a try. The biggest problem with (public) hosting
might not be technical, but getting others to use your server. There are
plenty and on an avarage time the majority runs empty: no pilot whatsoever
using it. If you run one for friends that't different of course.

Good luck and let us know if you succeed

Thanks for your comments guys. I probably won't run a server, but it's
good to get some feedback.

Hi,

...... Watchout for hackers and attackers. There are too may these days
in the Internet and I cann't imagine what it will be without proper
protection like firewall, antivirus, spam removers, anti spyware etc
software.

All the best.
