I was watching the Australian Open and you all know how it is,
commercials every 10 minutes.

So I wanted to ask someone down under. Is Fosters REALLY the word for
beer down there????

Hi Bob,

From my neck of the woods (Sydney), the answer is generally a resounding NO.
Fosters in the opinion of many is a disgrace and the fact that it is so
heavily promoted around the world shows the power of advertising and often
charges us with embarrasment to say the least.

A few months ago I was travelling in Asia with the wife and was horrified
that Fosters beer was often priced above top shelf Belgian drops. Doesn't
say much for the taste of the locals.

On a final note, I have to say that Fosters will however kick Bud's butt!

Cheers,
Dave E (Sydney)
(I drink top Aussie beers like Stella, Hoegaarden, Leffe, Erdinger and other
Trappist Ales...)

Horrifying indeed! Even me, not much of a drinker (though I don't
mind a nice glass of wine with dinner), can appreciate a fine, fresh
Belgian ale, yet I wasn't very impressed with the one Foster's I
tried about 20 years ago!

About US brews:

I could never stand any of the mass advertised US "regulars"
(Budweiser, Miller, etc.), but when some of those cute little
"micro-breweries" started popping up, I tried a beer from one place
in Seattle after a long, hot bicycle ride, and it wasn't entirely
unpleasant! :-)

I figured as much. Ever so often there's a commercial touting some ice
cream famous through-out Europe. I only lived there for 11 years so I
must have missed seeing that one. Actually I lived in Germany for 11
years, both when it was FRG, and then when it united.

Hi Bill,

For me the taste of a Hahn Premium or Cascade Premium is hard to beat at the
end of a long week (or a short week, if it's hot, or cold, or if the wind is
blowing at 15 deg from North.....). Don't mind the odd wheat beer either -
perhaps a little Redback from Western Australia.

Not really into the 'Crownies' (Crown Lager) - and it's not because it comes
from Victoria (Aussies will know what I mean here...).

Cheers,
Dave (Sydney)
(Really love the Belgians though...)

Had a great time in Colorado last September where I was introduced to USA
brew pubs and their beers. Even volunteered at the Denver Beer Festival!
Fantastic selection with some great flavours but they did tend to be quite
strong, bloody cold and over carbonated!
Later did the Coors Brewery tour during which the guide took great pride in
telling us we would be having the freshest beer possible in the lounge
afterwards! It was horrible!

If you hand someone a Fosters down here and say "G'day mate, hava beer." The
reply would usually be a sarcastic "You call that a beer??"
That's why we mostly export it

No flames from us... I am at a loss to explain American beer... it was bad
enough 20 years ago, then the marketing departments came up with "Light
Beer" (basically watering down their product). I thought, "That will never
sell..". Boy, was I wrong.

Explain this:
On vacation in Aruba I was enjoying Amstel. Got back to the states and
bought some Amstel and it was awful. I was on vacation in Canada enjoying
Lebatt Blue. Got back to the states bought some Blue and it was awful.

What's up with that?

Fer one thing, domestic Canadian beer is not the same as export Canadian
beer... Moosehead sold in the US isn't even made in Canada. Also, some US
states have stringent regulations on the alcohol content and brewing
methods of any beveage sold under the term "beer". I know in Georgia, the
alcohol limit had to be less than 6%, and it was damn hard to find a decent
double-bock.

Hmmm.... Melissa, I've just managed (after a LOT of fumbling about) to get
40tude Dialog "sort of" working here...

I notice that whenever I click on one of YOUR messages, I get a cute little

Is this some form of "hidden message" you're sending out, or is there

It seems a few people here are trying it now. I hope I haven't
inspired too many headaches by mentioning it the other day! :-)

Hmmm. There may well be a message in there somewhere, but if I
wanted to hide it, I guess it might have been more subtle to display
an X-Face of Bambi or something. ;-)

Seriously though, I've always felt that the medicinal/holy herb has
been unfairly and too harshly judged (most often by those who have
never bothered to personally investigate its particular charms), so I
don't mind giving it a bit of "positive exposure" here and there. :-)

I could offer all sorts of happy anecdotes from my own personal
experiences over the years, but here's something to consider as
well...

When my late father was dying of Leukemia, and suffering terribly from
the effects of chemotherapy after his bone marrow transplant, the
*only* thing that gave him any real relief from some of his many
discomforts were the THC pills his doctor gave him. Before this
experience of his, he had always been "anti-anything" that had to do
with the "evil weed" (even for purely medicinal purposes), though he
had never had any personal experience with it one way or another. His
moral and legal opposition to the herb had always been extreme. After
his experience with it, he seriously re-thought his position, and he
was ever thankful to God for providing such a fine and benevolent
natural herb (he mentioned this many times in just so many words).
:-)

Well, I've been looking for a better newsreader than Netscape... ;) But to
be honest, this has got way more bells and whistles than I can possibly
use, but I'm going to keep it anyway.

The biggest hurdle was trying to remember my durn password(s) for the SMTP
server and the news server! ;) It's been a LONG time since I've needed to
know them. ;)

I was actually teasing, since I didn't know that you could enable an
"Avatar" on a newsgroup reader... I'll have to see if I can find
something apropos for me, perhaps a clove of garlic or something.

I would rather my brother have had a prescription for THC rather than the
liquid morphine & ora-morph the doctor insisted that he take, while he was
dying from liver cancer The side-effects of morphine are IMHO far worse
than the medicinal benefits (severe constipation & dehydration). For
obvious reasons, the problem of addiction simply had no relevance whatever.

Dumbing it down for the American market.

When I was in Australia last August, I was surprised by how many Aussies
badmouthed Foster's. Apparently, it's exported in huge quantities because
no one over there will drink it. The beer of choice for me, in Adelaide, at
least, was Cooper's. And in Sydney and Cairns, it was Victoria Bitter (VB).
Both are quite good, IMHO.

IIRC from what my Dad told me (Brewery manager for 30 years......I miss all
that free beer......coming home from school (age7) and cracking open a can
of Brewmaster *sigh*) ...........Heineken is a 'dead' lager in that its
yeast is not active.....its pretty much sterile........in the UK the CO2
content, pressurization, acidity and being sealed up keep it fresh for a
year or so.......

However I much prefer Bitter to lagers.........more of a mans drink than a
boys drink to get bladdered on............

Anyone tried Bishops Finger.........yummy!
