Hey kids!
Just testing the use of 40tude Dialog.
Strangeness...I'm not even 40ish and Dialog should be Dialogue.
Picky picky! :-)

| Well then young Marcel (I'm 40 in two weeks), are you going to provide some
kind of review which compares it with OE. I have used OE for ages and find
it provides email and news just fine for my needs. However, I am always up
for trying something new if it potentially offers improvements.
Regards
Geoff

If what you've been using is fine for your needs, then that's all you
really have to be concerned with (as long as you've tightened up your
OE security settings and practices to the point where your own
machine won't be compromised by annoyances like viruses, Trojans, web
bugs/spyware, etc.).
On the other hand, it has often been my experience that until I'm
aware of something "better", I literally "don't know what I've been
missing". This has certainly been my experience with news readers
and email clients. Like most Windows users new to computers and the
Internet, OE was my first exposure to email *and* news, and for about
my first three months online, I was quite impressed with it. After
that initial "honeymoon" period, I realized that I could manage both
email and news more to my liking by using other programs. At this
point, I realize that the *only* reason I was impressed with OE at
all when I first got a computer was that it was the only email and/or
news program I knew of at the time. :-)
I guess the same could be said for any type of software...even flight
sims! If my only exposure to flight simming was "Flightgear", I
might still be quite impressed with it. As it is, I've discovered
MSFS, so "Flightgear" no longer resides on my computer (after all, I
need all the hard drive space I can spare to just install all my fs9
add-ons! :-)).

| Melissa,
Quite typically a simple question has turned into an excuse to knock
something, probably because it's Microsoft. Your post implies that when I've
gained some experience of computers and the Internet I will cease to be
impressed. As it is I've worked in IT including a spell in security for
about 17 years, and networking for a good deal longer. Therefore I tend to
do the things required to avoid viruses and if I did get one (Never really
suffered to date although that's probably tempting fate) I would just
restore the system from an external backup drive.
I was just curious why Marcel had tried it and if it may have any useful
features that I don't have. For home use OE does seem to do everything I
want with regard to news and email. Maybe some people have more complex
requirements in which case they opt for other applications that more readily
meet their needs. I have to use Novell GroupWise at work and hate it with a
passion. Our IT support people say it's less vulnerable to viruses. This is
only because nobody can be bothered to write them, a bit like the Mac I
suppose.
Sorry if I've misinterpreted your reply, however having used many operating
systems over the years I feel perfectly able to judge if a Microsoft freebie
is worth using or not.
Anyway enough of all that.
Regards
Geoff

I think you did misinterpret my reply in this sense, and I apologize
if I offended you in any way with my comments. When I "knock" a
program like OE, it is nothing more than my opinion; and such opinion
is only worth as much as you paid for it. :-)
The fact that I still use Windows, even after sincerely trying a
couple flavors of Linux should be some indication that I'm not just
another "bash MS" end user. Also, while I may not be very impressed
with OE (for my own reasons), I'm obviously very impressed with
Microsoft's flight sim, which I think is brilliant. When it comes to
computing, "company loyalty" (or its opposite) really has nothing to
do with how I form my opinions, and which bits of software I like or
dislike.

Personal reviews are always welcome, but if you just want a basic
"list of features" to pour over on your own and compare them to OE,
you can have a look at Dialog's "features" page to get a general
idea:
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/features.htm
Note the third paragraph of that page:
===============================================================
Please note that the list of features below is far from being
complete. We encourage you to download and see for yourself.
===============================================================
The features each of us might consider useful - or not - is entirely a
matter of personal preference. One of the many features I really
like that's not specifically mentioned on that page is the ability to
create custom "groups" of news groups in the "groups" pane regardless
of which news server is used to access each of the various groups.
For instance, I use 5 different news servers to access all the groups
I want to read, but I can create a "group" of groups to be displayed
in the "groups" pane that will include just the few groups I frequent
most often, so I don't have to either switch tabs between different
servers or be visually distracted by a long list of groups every time
I want to switch my focus from one group to another; regardless of
which news server is used to access each group. Of course, you can
create as many or as few "custom groupings" like this as you wish.
It's features like this that make me appreciate a news reader like
Dialog so much.

Considering that I've never looked for another newsreader, this was a huge
step. I didn't even know what I was looking for in another newsreader.
I don't even know where to start giving a review.
40tude Dialog has so many features it's gonna take me a while to figure it
out. It does seem faster when loading and sending posts.
You can send something yEnc encoded, but I see no option for yEnc decoding.
I still have to find a way of getting new posts automatically, like OE does
when you click on the newsgroup, but I'm sure that option is available.
It's one of those programs one can easily get lost in. :-)

The instructions are in the help files:
- From [Contents] tab:
"How Dialog Works (Conceptual Help)/Binary and multipart support"
You can also just perform a search in the help files for "binaries".
Funny thing, those "help" file thingies. They actually do seem to
help at times! :-)
quote:
> I still have to find a way of getting new posts automatically, like

It is available, and you can set your Dialog to do this by running a
"script" (only have to do this once). There are several scripts that
people have written for Dialog, so you don't need to know how to
write them yourself (unless you want to create your own custom
scripts). Once you see how it works, running one of these already
written scripts is basically just a copy/paste routine.
Here's the "official" script library (there are several unofficial
script libraries on the web as well). This library has many scripts
you might find useful:
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/wiki/i...General_scripts
The script that will do what you mention above is under the
"Retrieving" heading, second one down:
http://www.40tude.com/dialog/wiki/i...adersGroupClick
Once you activate this script, a single-click on a news group name
will download all new headers for that group. Read a bit about
scripts in the help files, and you'll realize how easy it is to use
these ready written scripts from the Script Library.
quote:
> It's one of those programs one can easily get lost in. :-)
Once you know your way around it, and set it up the way you like,
you'll see how it can make your news reading/posting very efficient
and easy. :-)

From the Dialog Help File:
"Please note that this help file is not up-to-date.
It reflects the functionality of the previous version 2.0.3.1 of the
application.
An updated version will be available with the final 2.0 version."
