| Karl struggled into the Fortree City Gym, wiping the sweat from his brow and
keeping a tight hold of the PokéBall on his belt. He kept looking towards
the ground to ensure that Nomak, his Farfetch'd, was behind him. He
stumbled several times as he made his way into the arena. His opponent was
already in the arena; a fourteen-year-old girl, twirling a bug net around
like a baton.
Karl was confused.
"Here at last!" grinned the girl. "Now you must face the might of my
incredible Bug Pokémon!"
"I thought I was facing-" started Karl, but he was cut short by the referee.
"And now, ladies and gentlemen, Karl Weiser has finally arrived, and is
ready to take on Cicada Kukaracha! Two junior trainers to start off the
Fortree Doubles Tournament."
"I'm almost twenty..." mumbled Karl unconvincingly. He threw in his
Psyduck's PokéBall, and Nomak flapped his way into the arena.
"A Psyduck and a Farfetch'd," announced the referee. "And it seems the
Farfetch'd isn't PokéBall trained. Let's hope its trainer has more control
over it in battle, folks."
"Go, my Bugs!" cried Cicada as she threw her Net Balls with an unnecessary
twirl.
"An Armaldo and a Vibrava!" gasped the referee as the Pokémon materialised.
"This girl's age doesn't betray her power."
"Hang on," said Karl. "Vibrava isn't a Bug."
"Yes it is," said Cicada matter-of-factly.
"Feh," said Nomak.
"Exactly," said Karl. "It's a Ground-stroke-Dragon type."
"It's NOT a Dragon!"
"Yes, it is."
"I hate Dragons! Horrible slimy things! Vibrava's a lovely Bug Pokémon,
aren't you, Vibrava?" Remembering herself suddenly, as she caught Vibrava's
gaze, Cicada cried, "Use your Earthquake! Now!"
Vibrava's Earthquake shook the entire stadium.
"Phy!" exclaimed the Psyduck, who'd taken some heavy damage.
Nomak hopped up as the ground shook, landing neatly on top of the Armaldo's
head.
Armaldo, however, seemed to be the worst affected of all. The Earthquake
knocked it off its feet.
"Peck it, Nomak!!" double-exclaimed Karl.
Nomak vaguely obeyed, tapping the Armaldo's head antagonistically with his
leek.
"Ice Beam the other one, Iceduck!"
Iceduck, who was still trying to work out how to pronounce his growl,
unleashed an Ice Beam on Vibrava, taking it out quickly.
"How did you do THAT?" asked Cicada.
"Quadruple weakness," explained Karl. "Ice is strong against both Ground
and Dra-"
"VIBRAVA ISN'T A DRAGON! SHE'S A BEAUTIFUL BUG!"
Armaldo fell to the floor. Nomak had apparently been Swords Dancing on his
head for some time, and a single Peck had rendered the beast unconscious.
"And Karl Weiser is the winner!" shouted the referee, who'd just finished a
quick snack.
"What a quick and to-the-point battle," commented Karl, blushing at the few
claps he received from the crowd.
