| Fifteen minutes after the battle between the Aqua pair finished, the
field was straightened out, the crowds were back from the minor
intermission and the third match was ready to begin.
From his spot, Jeff was beyond nervous. He was doing an admirable
job of trying to hide said nervousness but it just wasn't working fully.
The boy knew his strengths, but he was more worried about his
weakness, namely Shade's type-advantaged weaknesses, and one
hit from any of them would mean a 2-on-1 match.
His brother did have one last piece of helpful advice, just moments
before they had to split up. "Bro if it's a Dark-type, like Cacturne,
assume it has Faint Attack. If it's a flyer, assume it has Aerial Ace. It'll
be safer that way."
-------
"And participating in the Third match of the Fortree Doubles Tournament,
first from Goldenrod City, metropolis for Johto's best deals, let's welcome
Jeffery Raiser!"
Said boy strided purposefully, though still nervous behind his cheerful
front.
"And from, well, it doesn't say, but anyways let's here it from Janine
Tammerlane!"
A woman in her mid-twenties with short, blue hair, donned in a black pantsuit,
black overcoat, and low heels strode to the platform with the confidence that
Jeff wished he had at the moment.
The referee of this match seemed familiar, though Jeff couldn't identify him.
Those that could ID him would note that this particular ref was violating
union regulation and doing his job despite the strike. Wasn't his fault
that his hobby and his job were the same.
"Now, as with the last two matches, each contestant will battle with two
Pokémon each," the announcer declared. "No substitutions will be allowed.
The first contestant to have their Pokémon defeated loses, and the winner
goes on to the next round. All clear?"
"Uh-huh."
"Yes, sir"
"Then you may begin,"
"Shadow, Shade, Showtime!" Jeff said, the twin Bug-types appearing
with the obligatory nimbus of light courtesy of the pokeballs.
"Sully, Sequarro, report for duty!" Janine said, the adult lady summoning the
larger Swampert and Cacturne to the field.
"Shade, Dig the Swampert, Shadow, Double Team and Fury Cutter the
Cacturne."
"Sully, cool 'em off with your Surf. Sequarro, subdue that Shedinja with your
Faint Attack"
As the Shedinja sunk into the ground, phasing throught it, Shadow started his
charge across the field. Two made it to the Cacturne, four slashed at it, while
eight caught the full force of Sully's Surf attack. Meanwhile Sequarro faded
out for a flash and reappeared, displeasure that some measly ground stopped his
attack. It would be then that Shadow's second Fury Cutter scored home,
leaving a harder welt and a dripping trail from the previous aquatic assault.
"Sequarro, subdue that speeding bug with your Grasswhistle. Sully, Waterfall
it."
As the Swampert built up another wave of water, this time more vertical than
horizontal, Shade phased through the floor, the Waterfall attack, and hit Sully,
knocking the whole thing slightly off course.
Grumbling slightly about both the third Fury Cutter that was really starting to
hurt and the lack of actuall attacking, Sequarro whistled its Grasswhistle.
However, the Ninjack showed no signs of slowing down, actually speeding
up and nailing the Dark/Grass mix with a fourth and this time fnal Fury Cutter.
-------
"You know, I like that tune. It's kind of catchy," Bob noted from the bleacher
area, expanded for the tournament spectators.
"Whatever Bob do, no learn tune."
-------
Of course, it would be about this time that the Grasswhistle was actually
processed in Shadow's head and thusly the Ninjask skidded to a sleepy
halt about five feet away from the Cacturne. A Surf attempt by Sully to
actually hit Shade would wash him outside the boundry making it a one-on-one
battle.
It was a valiant effort, made at least interesting by the sprinkled use of
Double Team to make more pests to swat at, but the lack of any effective
attack meant that there was little Janine and her Swampert could do to
acutally win.
"Both Swampert and Cacturne are unable to battle, match go to Jeffrey Raiser."
The little breeder jumped for total joy, spinning round in circles and taking
the now awake Shadow for the ride. "WAHOO! Take five you guys and
after, we're going to have a feast fit for a Slowking!"
As Janine subduedly recalled her fainted pokemon, Jeff barely caught her turning
around.
"Hey! You did great over there! I hope you perfect that subdual style of
yours!" Jeff called from his side, still practically glomping the hapless
Ninjask.
"Thanks squirt," was the simple reply before she disappeared from the field.
Five minutes later, and away from almost everyone, the victory pose came out.
"Round 2, here I come!"
